Stone Town

3 hours

Stone Town is the cultural heart of Zanzibar. Beaches, winding alleys, bustling bazaars, mosques and grand Arab houses make up this fascinating town that was recently declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Stone Town is a wonderfully exotic blend of African, Arabic and European cultures and architecture. Most of the homes here were built in the 19th century when Zanzibar was one of the most important trading centers in the Indian Ocean region.

Say a friendly Jambo! (Hello!) as you make your way through the city.

Itinerary:

  • Begin/end at your hotel.
  • Walk/be driven to the city market (opened 1904) where you'll experience the buying/selling of tropical fruits and spices and hear the multiple dialects spoken in Zanzibar.
  • Proceed to the Anglican Church of Christ, built by Bishop Steers in 1874 on the site of the old slave market. Optional drive or walk to the National Museum of Zanzibar (opened in 1925) to see relics from the time of the Sultans and the early explorers.
  • Drive along Beach Road to Forodhani Gardens to see the Old British Consulate (where the body of late Dr. Livingstone was kept and later sent to Britain), the Arab Fort (1700), The House of Wonders (built in 1883).
  • Enjoy a leisurely walk through the narrow streets of Stone Town - most of the houses are over 150 years old. This section of town offers exotic small bazaars and curio shops.
  • End with a visit to Maruhubi Palace Ruins (1880) via Livingstone House (1866).
